Rareté absolue, modifiée par AMG, son Look est irrésistible.
La Mercedes W124 succède aux modèles W123 en 1985 avant d’être à son tour effacée par la Classe E W210 en 1995.
Elle se déclina en berline W124, break S124, coupé C124, cabriolet A124 et limousine V124 avec le succès qu’on lui connait sur le segment des berlines de classe moyenne.
Si les chiffres de production sont en retrait par rapport à sa devancière, elle symbolise toute la quintessence de la tradition Daimler-Benz avec une qualité de finition au-dessus des standards de l’époque, une fiabilité sans faille et un confort de roulement à la hauteur des exigences de la clientèle du constructeur allemand.
Du 4 cylindres diesel de 72 ch à la bestiale 500E équipée d’un V8 de 326 ch, Mercedes a pensé à tous ceux désirant rouler au volant d’une Mercedes... au final 2 724 381 exemplaires seront produits !
Le modèle qui nous intéresse ici a lui connu une production bien plus confidentielle. A la fin des années 1980 le préparateur d’Affalterbach va proposer des améliorations mécaniques et des kits carrosserie pour différents modèles de la gamme et notamment la 300 CE. Ainsi, ils font grimper la cylindrée du M103 de 3,0 l à 3,2 l et remplacent l’arbre à cames et l’admission. La puissance du 6 cylindres passe alors de 188 à 234 ch. Le coupé 300 CE connaitra 2 autres versions avec la 3,4 l basée sur le moteur M104 et développant 274 ch ainsi que la mythique Hammer équipée dans sa version la plus puissante d’un V8 de 6,0 l développant 385 ch.
Ces différentes versions ont été produites de manière très limitée, on estime la fabrication de chacune d’entre elles à quelques dizaines d’exemplaires, elles sont donc aujourd’hui extrêmement rares sur le marché.
L’exemplaire que nous présentons est un coupé 300 CE qui a été mis en circulation en novembre 1988 au Japon. On retrouve sous son capot un 6 cylindres de 3,2 l associé à une boite automatique à 4 rapports.
En plus de cette optimisation mécanique, notre exemplaire a bénéficié d’un kit carrosserie comprenant des pare-chocs avant et arrière et des bas de caisse spécifiques. Mais également des jantes AMG 16 pouces couleur carrosserie et un becquet sur le coffre arrière de type ducktail.
La somme de tous ces appendisses associés à une teinte carrosserie blanc arctique confèrent à cette auto un look tout à fait bestiale. Dans l’habitacle, le ton est donné avec un volant 4 branches ciglé AMG, des compteurs à fonds blancs spécifiques gradués jusqu’à 300 k/h ainsi que quelques insignes AMG.
La sellerie en cuir noir correspond au modèle de série, elle est très bien conservée tout comme l’habitacle qui se trouve en très bel état.
Son essai routier nous a donné entière satisfaction et nous a démontré tout le potentiel de l’auto qui peut s’avérer démoniaque lorsque l’on enfonce la pédale d’accélérateur.
Notre exemplaire très bien préservé mérite donc l’intérêt des collectionneurs les plus exigeants.
Sa rareté, son look et ses performances en font avec certitude l’une des youngtimers les plus désirables de la production allemande.

The Mercedes W124 succeeded the W123 models in 1985 before being in turn erased by the E-Class W210 in 1995.
It was available as a W124 sedan, S124 station wagon, C124 coupé, A124 convertible and V124 limousine with the success we know of in the middle class sedan segment.
Although the production figures are down on its predecessor, it symbolizes the quintessence of the Daimler-Benz tradition with a quality of finish above the standards of the time, flawless reliability and ride comfort at the height of the requirements of the German manufacturer’s customers.
From the 72 hp 4-cylinder diesel to the bestial 500E equipped with a 326 hp V8, Mercedes has thought of all those wishing to drive a Mercedes... in the end 2,724,381 units will be produced!
The model that interests us here had a much more confidential production. At the end of the 1980s, the Affalterbach tuner offered mechanical improvements and body kits for various models in the range and in particular the 300 CE. Thus, they increase the displacement of the M103 from 3.0 l to 3.2 l and replace the camshaft and the intake. The power of the 6-cylinder then goes from 188 to 234 hp. The 300 CE coupe will know 2 other versions with the 3.4 l based on the M104 engine and developing 274 hp as well as the legendary Hammer equipped in its most powerful version with a 6.0 l V8 developing 385 hp.
These different versions were produced in a very limited way, it is estimated that each of them was produced at a few dozen copies, so they are extremely rare on the market today.
The car on offer is a 300 CE coupé which was put into circulation in November 1988 in Japan. Under the hood is a 3.2L 6-cylinder engine paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission.
In addition to this mechanical optimization, our copy benefited from a body kit including front and rear bumpers and specific rocker panels. But also 16-inch AMG rims in body color and a spoiler on the ducktail type rear trunk.
The sum of all these appendages associated with an arctic white body color give this car a look that is quite bestial. Inside, the tone is set with a 4-spoke AMG branded steering wheel, specific white background dials graduated up to 300 kph as well as a few AMG badges.
The black leather upholstery corresponds to the production model, it is very well preserved, as is the passenger compartment, which is in very good condition.
Its road test gave us complete satisfaction and showed us the full potential of the car, which can turn out to be demonic when you press the accelerator pedal.
Our very well preserved example therefore deserves the interest of the most demanding collectors.
Its rarity, its look and its performance make it with certainty one of the most desirable youngtimers of German production.
